This is a beautiful piece of Victorian History and a rare find.

It is crafted from Whitby Jet, a medium that was much loved by the Victorian people for it’s jet black colour, shiny lustre and light weight.

It’s amazing that they could make the whole piece from jet, including the links of the chain to the raised petal of the rose on the pendant. The piece measures approximately 50cms in length and the oval pendant is approx 4cms x 3.5cms.

This piece is in excellent, antique condition with no cracks or chips. It has had one repair to one of the links which we have captured in the photos.

It attracts much interest when worn.

Jet pieces were meticulously carved from chunks that were mined with great difficulty from the cliffs of the North Yorkshire coast. Jet is actually a form of petrified peat that has formed under pressure over millenia. It was only found in small amounts in a couple of countries and has since been depleted which makes jet jewellery expensive and very collectable.
