ANTIQUE 10CT ROSE GOLD COLOUR CHANGE CREATED ALEXANDRITE AND PASTE EARRINGS WITH VALUATION
These are Very Unique Antique Earrings & a True Rarity
These earrings are set with synthetic Corundum ‘imitating Alexandrite’ and colourless paste. Circa 1920s places them very early in the era of ‘colour-change’ creation. They are crafted in 10ct Rose Gold and they are unusual because the clips open at the front of the setting. These settings are typical of the 1920s and called ‘Dormeuse’, or sleeper in the French language. The style was constructed with a back-to-front ear wire so that they can be worn by day and are comfortable when asleep. They were popular in the mid 19th to earlier 20th centuries.
Quick History of ‘Corundum Imitating Alexandrite’
Alexandrite is a ‘colour change’ gemstone and extremely rare, so about 100 years ago, synthetic Alexandrite creation was discovered by growing ‘Corundum’ (Sapphire crystals) and adding Vanadium to the process to produce the colour-change effect. This was an exciting discovery and Tiffany’s quickly came onboard to retail the jewellery. Since then, simulated Alexandrite creation has developed so that the stones now have a similar composition to Natural Alexandrite. The colour change effect of the first groups is very subtle, whilst the more modern synthetics, developed after 1960, show strong colour change.
So, the colour change effect of these earrings is subtle with a change from purple to medium dark green and can be seen properly when viewed between natural daylight and incandescent light.
Surrounding the central stones are 16 claw set, round old cut, white glass (paste). The earrings sit elegantly below the earlobe and have a European feel. Together they weigh 4.11 grams and they come with a Valuation Certificate with a Retail Replacement Value of $3,150.
These really are lovely earrings, with a great story to tell. They are in very good antique condition.
