Antique Victorian 15ct Gold Brooch Dinna Forget Hallmarked Birmingham 1899
Antique Victorian 15ct Gold Brooch Dinna Forget Hallmarked Birmingham 1899
Presenting this meaningful brooch with interesting history.
The piece features the motif 'Dinna Forget' and the Scottish Thistle emblem carved in 15ct yellow gold. It also sports a tiny, green stone which is probably paste and a fine, swag chain at the bottom.
The brooch bears hallmarks for Birmingham 1899, 15ct (625) and the makers mark HN&Co for Henry Nathan and Co. This is where the story gets interesting, because the brooch has somehow made its way to Australia and into the hands of A. Saunders, who were prominent jewellers in the Sydney CBD at the turn of the 20th century. One might assume, that the brooch was given to a lady who was departing for Australia in the early 1900s, and given as a token of love by a Scottish gentleman, hoping that he would not be forgotten. But, it would seem that this hope was in vane and the brooch was possibly hocked to A. Saunders. Saunders then added their own hallmark and registry number: RD337012 and probably on-sold it. Sometimes I wish these pieces could talk to us and reveal their life's journey!
The Brooch is in excellent, antique condition. It measures approximately 4.5cms and is secured by a gold pin and C clasp with a strong hinge.
This is a little treasure that we will 'Dinna Forget'.
