Finest Example of Victorian Bohemian Jewellery
This fabulous Bohemian Garnet brooch is from the Victorian era (Circa 1890). The piece is made of silver and gilt with 5ct gold. It is encrusted with 85 faceted Garnets set in a flower cluster and which weigh a total of 26ct (estimated while set).
The garnets are classified as Almandine on the valuation certificate, but they were actually mined in Czechoslovakia which was then known as Bohemia and the area was renowned for producing these 'blood red' Garnets which were highly prized by Victorian women of the time.
The brooch pin, hook and pin are in excellent condition. An absolutely stunning example of Bohemian garnet jewellery, this breathtaking would make a very impressive addition to any collection!
The piece comes with a valuation certificate with a retail replacement value of $4,214 for insurance purposes. It measures approximately 3cms in diametre (see photos). It is in excellent antique condition with no flaws and all of the Garnets are securely set.
Bohemian garnet jewellery dates back to the 19th century. During this time, garnets were one of the most popular types of stones used in jewellery production. Most often, bohemian garnet jewellery was set in a closed back setting made of rose gold gilt over silver; this method is sometimes referred to as 'garnet gold'.
