VICTORIAN ANTIQUE ONYX AND PEARL MOURNING BROOCH WITH HAIR WORK c1880s
VICTORIAN ANTIQUE ONYX AND PEARL MOURNING BROOCH WITH HAIR WORK c1880s
Here is a very beautiful, antique Natural Onyx and Pearl mourning brooch.
From the Georgian to the Victorian eras, mourning jewellery was a sweet way to remember the passing of a loved one. Queen Victoria herself, made them even more popular when her Prince Albert passed away in 1861 and she spent the rest of her life wearing black mourning jewellery.
This beautiful brooch is an excellent example of these times. It is in superb, antique condition and features Natural Onyx set with pearls in a starburst motif. The setting tests 15ct Rose Gold. The Onyx stone is beautifully polished with a bezel edge. The reverse holds a glass panel with plaited hair work underneath. The brooch is secured by a gold pin and C clasp with a solid hinge. Someone has hand-scratched a name onto the back which looks like ‘Pipi Lang’. The Brooch measures approximately 3.9mm long by 3mm wide and it weigh approximately 14.1 grams.
We have to consider that this was the only way available at the time, to remember your beloved since photography was not yet available to the general public. If only this piece could speak to us!
