ANTIQUE SHELL CAMEO BROOCH DEPICTING DIONYSUS C1890s 9CT YELLOW GOLD

ANTIQUE SHELL CAMEO BROOCH DEPICTING DIONYSUS C1890s 9CT YELLOW GOLD

A$650.00

This is a beautifully carved cameo brooch.

It is carved from the conch shell and displays very fine detail as you can see in the photos. The head is of the Greek God ‘Dionysus’ who was the son of Zeus and Semele who was the daughter of the King of Thebes. He was the God of fruitfulness, vegetation, wine and ecstasy, hence he has been carved with grapes and leaves in his hair. This depiction is the side view of a very handsome, young man.

The piece is late Victorian (C1890s) and measures approximately 4.2mm x 3.5mm and the setting tests 9ct gold (unmarked). There is a faint signature on the back of the cameo that looks like ‘Sily’.
